We understand the art form of drag queens can be dated back to the arrival of play performance during Shakespeare, so we take our performance medium incredibly seriously. Bar Argon is one of the most popular and beloved LGBTQ+ bars in Charlotte and is well known for its weekly drag shows. The bar features a spacious and lively stage, where talented local drag performers showcase their skills and entertain the audience. You can expect to see local queens Erica Chanel and Riley Malicious, along with DJ Vanna Vanity on the decks. In addition to the drag shows, Bar Argon also hosts other LGBTQ+ events, including karaoke nights, trivia nights, themed dance parties and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” watch parties. Drag brunch is a unique and exciting way to celebrate a birthday in Charlotte.

The boundary-pushing nature of drag artistry aligns seamlessly with the spirit of Charlotte. Drag brunch has become a haven for self-expression, where performers fearlessly challenge norms and celebrate their individuality while making sure everyone has a blast. Csoka debuted the brunch that fall, then made it a monthly tradition, with each edition benefiting a different local charity. In 2021, the events raised a combined $25,000, a figure Csoka expects to blow past this year. Charlotte Pride is the leader in LGBTQ visibility in Charlotte and the Carolinas.

The experience of indulging in a sumptuous meal while being serenaded by drag royalty elevates brunch to an entirely new level. In summer 2020, around the corner from The Artisan’s Palate, Chasers was struggling. The pandemic had called curtains on the gay club’s nightly drag shows, and the queens needed work. So Christa Csoka, who owns The Artisan’s Palate, offered to host a drag brunch to benefit Chasers. The restaurant would pay the queens on top of tips, and all proceeds from ticket sales would go to the club. It’s important to note that while the need for queer safe spaces is significant, the goal is to create a society where all spaces are safe and inclusive for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In any event, alcohol makes things better, and drinking in the daytime at brunches has always been a thing. Once you combine fabulous drag with day drinking and food, you now have an event for the ages. Yet, drag brunch is more than just a feast for the senses; it's also a culinary adventure with the different types of foods most locations have. The brunch menus are often carefully curated to reflect the city's diverse food culture. From classic eggs benedict with a twist to avant-garde creations that push the boundaries of traditional brunch fare, the culinary offerings mirror the creativity and vibrancy of the performances themselves.
